Antique Irish Silver Salver

Object Description

An attractive antique silver salver with a beautifully cast and pierced border with flowers, berries and leaves. To the centre is a hand engraved coat of arms surmounted by a lion crest. All raised on 4 decorative feet.

Weight 363 grams, 11.6 troy ounces.

Maker Charles Mullin.

Dublin circa 1770.

Sterling silver.

Marks. Stamped on the underside with the Irish harp, Hibernia mark and makers mark. Scratchweight 12=8.

Charles Mullen, Dublin silversmith. Listed by Jackson as a goldsmith and jeweller, noted from a directory of 1775. A further Michael C. Mullen, noted from a 1798 directory, is listed as a Jeweller.

Object Literature

The traditional form of salver with plain flat surfaces and small feet at the edge, rarely found before the reign of George I, was made in various forms such as round, rectangular, oval and octagonal and are an ideal starting off point for collectors of early silver. The term “waiter” is not commonly used but relates to small examples less than 6 or 7 inches; these have become very popular now to stand a bottle or wine glass
