Object Description
Antique Japanese parcel gilt porcelain dish
Japanese, late 19th Century
Height 7.5cm, diameter 37cm
This fine porcelain dish is a superb piece Satsuma ware from the Meiji period: Satsuma ware being a Japanese style designed to appeal to European markets by its use of gilding and busy, vibrant colours. The present example depicts a scene of birds scattered about some marshland trees, the birds and features throughout accented with gilding. The scene is encompassed by a red border, richly adorned with geometrical and foliate detailing, accented again with gilding. The piece, despite being designed for export to Europe, is still distinctly Japanese in style and feeling.
