Object Description
An absolutely top quality Antique Mahogany and Marquetry Octagonal Center Table in superb original condition. Attributed to the furniture makers Edwards and Roberts.
The top has four serpentine and four straight sides cross-banded in king-wood with ebony and boxwood stringing. Inside of this is a 3 inch band of satinwood inlaid with a flowing border of leaves and flowers with etched details.
The center of the table has a veneer of deep colored and well figured ‘plum pudding’ mahogany.
The table has an inlaid frieze beneath the top. The four tapering square legs also have floral marquetry and terminate in the original brass castors. The legs are connected with four upward swept stretchers meeting a central turned column both inlaid with boxwood.
*Marquetry is the application of veneers to the structure of a piece of furniture and involves pictorial designs. The body of the furniture is carved out to receive a piece of wood veneer which is inlaid.
The visual delight that marquetry provides, and the design versatility is perhaps why the technique has been used from the 17th century to modern times and the use of rare woods can create beautiful effects.
