Antique Mahogany Partners Desk by Edwards and Roberts

Object Description

This very attractive antique Victorian mahogany partners desk dates from the middle of the 19th century and was made from well figured timbers by the respected cabinet makers *Edwards and Roberts.
There is a stamp mark on the top of the second drawer down on the right pedestal.
It has recently benefited from traditional restoration and has a replacement black hide writing surface with gilt and blind tooling.

The writing surface is surrounded by a 2 inch band of mahogany with a thumb moulded edge and rounded corners. The top is fitted with 3 drawers to front and reverse.

The pedestals are each fitted with three drawers to the front and cupboards to the reverse and stand on plinth bases with hidden castors.

The drawer fronts have ogee moulding to the edge with boldly turned mahogany pull knob handles. They have mahogany linings the original brass locks and are constructed with hand made dovetail joints.

The desk is made in three sections, the top and two separate pedestals, for ease of transportation and installation.

This is a good quality antique partners desk which would look very impressive in any library, study or office.

Object Literature

*Edwards and Roberts were one of the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the nineteenth century. Founded in 1845 trading as ‘Edwards and Roberts’ from 21 Wardour Street as Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture’.
The company became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers producing high quality furniture, and good copies of 18th and 19th century English and French furniture.
Their workmanship was of the highest quality. Their furniture was made with the best quality timbers, with finely figured mahogany, burr walnut and satinwood.
They were well known for the quality of their marquetry furniture in the Georgian style.
