Object Description
This very good quality antique French commode, or chest of drawers, has a lovely serpentine shape to the front and the sides. It is veneered in kingwood with chevron cross banding in a parquetry manner.
The chest has numerous brass work embellishments, which are all original to the chest. These consist of; ornate brass escutcheons plates, drop handles with floral back plates and decoration to the center of the the shaped frieze and rounded corners at the feet.
The chest has four long drawers with oak linings and are separated by fluted dividers inset with brass. The front edges are also decorated with similar brass inserts.
It has its original fossilized marble top known as ‘Marmo di Brescia’, a rare marble that contains fossilized sea creatures. The overall color of the marble is a reddish brown with streaks of white and grey.
The chest has benefited from recent professional cleaning, color revival and polishing. All of the drawers work well and have small internal stops to prevent them from being pulled out completely.
This is a very decorative and rare antique commode which would look equally stunning in a traditional or contemporary setting.
