Object Description
Antique Neoclassical style glass and gilt bronze lantern
French, late 19th Century
Height 46cm, diameter 21cm
This fine, antique lantern was made after an 18th Century model for the Chateau of Versailles, and takes the octagonal ‘Versailles’ or ‘beehive’ form. The main body of the lantern surrounding the light is formed of a gilt bronze lattice with flowers at the corners which holds panes of bevelled glass. The lower gilt bronze finial of the lantern is of pine cone form, and to the top of the lantern is a semi-spherical gilt bronze mount featuring draping, topped by a stylized acanthus leaf form fixture beneath the hanging chain.
