Object Description

This is an exquisite antique pair of dark patinated bronze and gilded ormolu five light, four branch figural garniture candelabra, signed J.Salmson, (Jean-Jules Salmson, 1823-1902), Circa 1870 in date.
Each is cast in the neo-grecian style, the scrolling angular candle arms with urn nozzles, surmounted by a further nozzle with scrolling finial supported by superbly cast classical maidens, on circular bases signed J.Salmson, and raised on square black marble plinths.

There is no mistaking the unique quality and design of this elegant pair and they are sure to become the centrepiece of your collection.

The French sculptor Jean Jules Salmson (1823-1902)
worked in Paris and participated in the French Salon exhibitions from 1859. He was rewarded with medals for his work when he participated in the World Exhibitions of 1867 and 1889 in Paris.

Paris born, a pupil of Ramey, Toussaint & Dumont; he commenced exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1859; made a chevalier of the Legion d’honneur in 1867; director of the Geneva School of art in 1867; director of the Institut Francaise in 1891. Published his autobiography, ‘Between two blows of a Chisel’ in 1892.
