Object Description

A beautiful antique diamond and ruby heart brooch/ pendant c.1915, the domed heart finely crafted in platinum and backed with gold centred on a cushion shaped rich red ruby and then pavé set throughout with old cut diamonds with a pierced open backing, suspended from a fold-down diamond set bale and with single pin brooch fitting to the reverse, from a fine platinum trace chain. Tokens of love and sentiment feature prominently in jewellery dating back to the medieval period, but it was during the 19th century that the heart motif became highly prominent. The Victorian’s were hugely fond of heart shaped jewels, no doubt influenced by Queen Victoria’s fondness for the shape and this carried through in to the 20th century. It is a motif that remains beloved by many and this pretty pendant is a particularly beautiful representation of it. The ruby in the centre is a wonderful deep colour and rubies have long been associated with passion. This is surrounded by diamonds which represent everlasting love due to their supreme durability so we have three symbols of love in one romantic jewel. It can be worn both as a pendant and brooch, offering flexibility depending on the occasion or the outfit.
