Object Description

A vivid striking South-west Caucasian rug from the Sewan Kazak region.  These iconic tribal village weavings are easily recognisable with their bold shield medallion design accompanied by the scattered tribal plants growing in the background of the main red field.  The slender plants use various colours as does the shield medallion, with Caucasian rugs famous for their energetic colours this masterful rug is no exception.  The dye we can see in the shield medallion is wonderful, changing from blue to green at the top.  Woven around 1880-1890 the condition of this early Caucasian rug is good, with the wool pile medium high all over.  No large areas of restoration only some minimal expert work to preserve the rugs value.  The brown dye in the outer border has some corrosion due to the metal in the wool used. A really beautiful example, a real collectors piece for the floor or even to be hung on a wall.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.
