Object Description

A very pretty antique sterling silver folding pocket knife in the original brown leather purse. Real mother of pearl. Both silver and pearl have attractive engraved decoration. Length 14.4 cms, 8.5 cms (folded). Sheffield 1920. Maker J Y Cowlishaw.

Biography – John Yeomans Cowlishaw of Sheffield, England. J Y Cowlishaw, an outstanding fruit knife maker ranking alongside George Unite, registered his mark in 1854. His firm was taken over by J G Crowther t/a Cowlishaw & Bell of Sheffield who registered the same JYC mark at the Chester Assay Office in 1906.

Object Condition

This useful knife is in very condition with no damage or restoration to the silver or mother of pearl. The spring is still tight and the blade opens and closes well. Marked on the blade with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks. Fully functional.
