Object Description

A large set of sterling silver cutlery with matching silver handled knives in the popular rat tail pattern. Good plain style. Total 119 pieces. This canteen for 12 people has a large number of additional spoons and forks, and 4 serving ladles. All engraved on the reverse with a monogram* of initials in old fashioned script. Total weight excluding knives 5662 grams, 182 troy ounces. Flatware** London 1908, maker Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company. Knives Sheffield 1974, maker Roberts & Belk.

Biography – This company was established in 1880 by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman using premises at 112 Regent Street, London, previously John Joseph Mechi. In 1893 the firm took over The Goldsmiths’ Alliance Ltd (late A.B. Savory & Sons) becoming in 1898 the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd, active as jewellers, dealers in diamonds and precious stones, silversmiths, electroplaters and watch and clock makers. In 1952 Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd was amalgamated with Garrard & Co Ltd. This prestigious company exhibited at home and abroad including the Indian and Colonial Exhibition (London, 1886), Paris (1889), Chicago (1893), California (1894), Paris (1900) and Franco-British Exhibition (London, 1908).

The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co were manufacturers with workshops in Newcastle Place, Clerkenwell; Regent Works, Sheffield and Rue St George, Paris and also retailer of items supplied by various British gold and silver manufacturers (Martin Hall & Co Ltd, W&G Sissons, Wakely & Wheeler, William Comyns, Harrison Brothers & Howson, etc.)

Object Condition

This extensive set of silver cutlery is in very good usable condition, the fork prongs and spoon bowls are in good order with no wear. All pieces are stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks. All matching date and maker (London 1908 by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company) except the knives (Sheffield 1968 by William Bush & Sons) and the coffee spoons** (Sheffield 1974 by Roberts & Belk). The knives and coffee spoons do not have the engraved monogram*.
