Object Description

A fine quality antique sterling silver snuff box with a bright gilt finish. The top has a high relief decoration of a pedlar in old fashioned costume selling his wares in a crowded market. The sides and base have a crisp engine turned finish. Original bright gilt interior. Weight 176 grams, 5.6 troy ounces. Top measures 9.5×5.5 cms. Height 2.2 cms (top of box), 3 cms (top of pedlar). Birmingham 1843. Maker Edward Smith. Retailer Elkington & Co.

Object Condition

The early Victorian silver gilt snuff box is very good condition with no damage or restoration. The gilt is original, very bright, and has no wear. The decoration is sharp. Marked on the lid and inside the base with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks.
