Object Description

A magnificent quality Victorian sterling silver salver with a decorative cast border. Large size. Good weight. The centre has a finely engraved decorative border with eagles, flowers, scrolls and swags. The cast border has a classical pierced decoration of urns and face masks flanked by panthers; the rope border has vine leaf ornament. Weight 2316 grams, 74.4 troy ounces. Diameter 45.4 cms. Height 3.8 cms. London 1878. Maker Stephen Smith.

Stephen Smith, London silversmith, working circa 1850-1880. Specialist in important decorative works in the neoclassical style after Cellini and Teniers.

Object Condition

This excellent salver is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The engraving is sharp, the cast border has good definition. The silver marks are clear; the cast border is stamped with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks, the centre has the maker and lion stamps.
