Object Description

A Large outsize silver Victorian goblet with original gilt interior bearing on one side the inscription-This cup presented to the 1st E.Y.R.V by Mrs Saltmarshe was won by A.Scotchburn Assistant Surgeon of the Driffield Company on the 16th of July 1861 Fifty- four competitors and on the opposing side the regimental armorials. To the side is a finely chased panel of soldiers by an army tent. E.Y.R.V. stands for East Yorkshire Rifle Volunteers. Alfred Scotchburn was presented this prize by the wife of the commanding officer Phillip Saltmarshe. The goblet will hold over 900 ml of wine (about 1.2 bottles!)
