Object Description

An excellent quality antique silver bottle ticket with a silver chain. Good weight. The elaborate bacchanalian scene portrays two cherubs holding flagons of wine surrounded by grape and vine leaf decoration and a face mask below. Engraved “CLARET” to the scroll centre.
Weight 18 grams.
Measures 6.3 x 3.7 cm.
Birmingham 1807. Maker Matthew Linwood.

MATTHEW LINWOOD
Matthew Linwood I, Birmingham silver maker, was born 1754, apprenticed to Joseph Hunt (described in directories as a ‘Gilt Toy, Plated Military and Crest Button Maker’). He registered 3 marks between 1773 and 1801. His son Matthew Linwood II (1756-1826) was a notable maker of silver boxes. Guardian of the Birmingham Assay Office in 1811. He registered marks in 1813 in partnership with his son Matthew Linwood III (1783-1847) who later moved to London, opening a jeweller’s shop in Fleet Street.

Object Condition

A quality little spirit label in good condition. Stamped with a full set of clear English hallmarks.
