Object Description

A medium sized well used 18th century Sussex elm log bowl, they came in four sizes and were made from sawing across the grain of an elm log, and then turned on a pole lathe. It is said they emanate originally from a Sussex farm house as eating bowls, see Pinto page 89 plate 84.

A similar example is illustrated in David Levi’s book Treen for the Table, plate 11/19 on page 150, and he also suggests that they were farmhouse eating bowls.

The whole has been well used and has a pleasing grain and pale colour.
