Object Description

An elm shelf or wall mounted lidded rectangular box for the storage of prepared rushlights ready for use, of nailed construction, having brass hinges, sloping lid, shaped backboard and suspension hole. An average 12 inch rushlight will burn for about 20 minutes and were often used instead of candles, which were much more expensive. It has a small amount of historic scattered worm holes, very often found in elm items. The whole has a good colour, grain and patination.
