Object Description

A set of nine Victorian boxwood hooded skittles and three cheeses, known also as nine pins. In the 14th century called kayles in England and kyles in Scotland. They were often found in coaching inns, hence the phrase about life, ‘not being all beer and skittles’. In some parts of the country a ball was used, while in other parts a flat cheese, as in this instance. They were popular in Northamtonshire.
