Object Description

An attractive sycamore Eden Vale goose wing knitting sheath, having a chip carved edge and oval inset bone plaque inscribed Ann Snaith 1839. It has a turned and fluted handle at the needle end. The wood is of an unusual colour and is stained a grey shade, retaining a good overall patination. This sheath originates from the upper section of the Eden Valley from Appleby, towards Kirkby Stephen, and then along its tributary, the Scandal Beck to Ravenstonedale.
