Object Description
An exceptional early 18th century lignum vitae pestle and mortar, turned from heart wood of bulbous form, having a rounded lip, concave and stepped bands and raised on a rounded foot. The pestle, we consider original to the mortar, and is of an early 18th century form with an historic metal sleeve, which adds interest in so much that it probably had extensive wear and use. The whole has a wonderful rich colour and patination.
Pestle: 14.75 in. (37.5 cm.) Long and 2.75 in. (7 cm.) in diameter
