Object Description

A very attractive antique silver candlestick of baluster form on a pedestal foot. Pretty design with embossed flowers and a cast decorative handle. The plain central column, with fixed candle nozzle, has engraved decoration and unscrews from the base. Weight 139 grams, 4.4 troy ounces. Height 8.5 cms. Spread across handle 19 cms. Diameter 13 cms. Marked both on the pan and nozzle with Turkish tughra silver marks. Ottoman period. Circa 1880.

Object Literature

A tughra (Ottoman Turkish: طغرا‎ tuğrâ) is a calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of a sultan that was affixed to all official documents and correspondence. It was also carved on his seal, stamped on the coins minted during his reign and assayed on all gold and silver wares.

Object Condition

This useful travelling candle light is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Silver marks on all pieces. The decoration is well defined and shows no wear.
