Object Description

Unusual Pewter tankard with hinged lid featuring the “Green Man” with a fabulously shaped handle. Pewter marks of TOR and BPC within a triangle and outer circle and a deer stamp within a circle to the side and base. The overall width including the handle is 18cm and height to top of handle 13cm
The Green Man is derived from the C16th men who, fantastically dressed in green with masks and wreaths of green leaves on their heads. They formed part of the pageants in which our ancestors delighted. Their main purpose was to precede the procession to clear the way.
