Canvas: Height 63cm, width 79.5cm, depth 2cm
This fine Orientalist oil painting is by the Austrian artist Hans Zatzka. The painting depicts an interior setting, one distinctly Orientalist in décor and feeling. The interior, which is decorated with carpets and incense burners and bunches of flowers, is home to three women, each wearing revealing, alluring dress. They are occupants of a harem, as evidenced by their seductive clothing and manner. The painting is executed finely and precisely, with a dark colour palette employed to lend the composition a sombre tonality. The work, contained within a giltwood frame, is signed lower right ‘H. Zatzka’.
