Object Description

An exceptional, fine antique William III English Britannia standard silver brandy pan; an addition to our collection of 17th century silverware.

This exceptional antique William III Britannia standard* silver brandy pan has a plain circular form with a flared rim.

The surface of the pan is plain and unembellished, with a subtle planished finished.

The pan is fitted with an impressive turned carved wood handle with a hallmarked plain cylindrical Britannia silver tapering socket, in addition to a square terminal in junction with the body.

The underside of the vessel bears the engraved initials ‘HEM’.

This exceptional brandy pan, crafted by the London silversmith Alexander Roode, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.

* Britannia Silver – The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).
