Frame: Height 40cm, width 45cm, depth 2cm
Sheet: Height 22cm, width 28cm
This quite beautiful watercolour is by the Scottish artist Peter MacGregor Wilson, who travelled widely in the East and was celebrated for his Orientalist portrayals of exotic locales.
The present watercolour depicts four figures seated beside a shallow pool within the shade of a colonnaded space. The painterly style is fluid and expressive, and the colour palette is warm and vibrant, hinting at the heat of the setting – Kashan, in Iran.
The painting, which is contained within a giltwood frame, is signed lower right ‘P. MacGregor Wilson RSW’ and is situated lower left ‘Kashan, Persia’.
