Object Description

A bronze flat discoid miniature shield with a U-shaped grip to the underside. An unusual and rare item of a likely votive character since it is too large in diameter for a button or a stud. The offering of miniature weapons at shrines or in a body of water, such as lakes, springs, rivers and bogs, was a common practice amongst the Celtic peoples before and after the Roman conquest. They are possibly associated with success in war or the appeasement of a warrior deity for good harvest or health.
