A Bugbear Flask carved out of a coconut.
Sailors from a number of countries would carve green coconuts to while away the time on a long journey. This Bugbear Flask shows 4 scenes around the oval coconut; a huntsman with a rifle and dog, armour, drums, flags and other symbols of war, a shield above a follower with fronds to its sides and lastly, a tomb with a heart above, attended by an angel with a torch to light the way. To one end you have the Bugbear’s face with a beard, eyebrows, an open eye and mouth and the other eye closed. To the bottom is a simple pattern with leaves.
Bugbears were made throughout most of the 19th Century and sometimes fitted with silver mouthpieces for use as a gun flask. 19th Century.
