Wooden Bust of A Knight.
A wonderful armoured knight carved from lime wood. The knight is well carved with the face (with moustache) looking out of the helmet with a raised visor. The black and gold armour is well decorated; the helmet has a plume holder to the rear and the rest of the armour consists of gorget, pauldron, breastplate, revebrace and ending at the couter (elbow). The carving had gesso applied before it has been realistically painted, some of the paintwork is chipped. We believe this sculptor of a medieval knight was a collection box of some description. The body is hollow and is fitted with a hinged helmet, a keyhole is in the back, to allow access to collect the money. The money would have been put through the slotted visor. This is a very rare and unusual piece in good original condition.
Probably Spanish or Italian.
