Object Description

This cast topped Victorian silver snuff box was made in Birmingham in 1838 by Nathaniel Mills and measures 3 1/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide and is 1 inch deep, it has a cast scene to the lid which appears to be Achilles dragging Hector with his chariot, the sides are convex with engravings of weapons, shields, helmets and arrows and to the base t is engine turned with a central cartouche bearing the crest of a raised arm holding a scimitar. To the inside it is gilded and fully hallmarked base and lid and to the lid there is the inscription PRESENTED TO WILLIAM CHIRIE ESQ TOKEN OF GREATEST REMEMBERANCE BY H. BATHURST, L. FYLER, C. TEESDALE. It is in excellent condition and weighs 4.50 ounces or 140 grams, a lovely box by an excellent maker.
