Object Description
Chinese Transitional 17th century late Ming Ko-sometsuke hexagonal porcelain dish. made for the Japanese market for the Japanese tea ceremony.
Painted to the centre with over glaze decoration to show pomegranates, cicadas, and grass hoppers with branches and foliage, in orange, green, aubergine and a slight heightening with gold lacquer.
Pomegranate is also known as the Chinese apple and is the symbol for abundance and when ripe as in this painting it is the wish for many sons.
The outside rim is painted with various geometric patterns with cartouches of flowers or a figure in a landscape.
The foot rim has kiln grit adhered to the rim which is a common flaw in Ko-sometsuke ware.
