Object Description
A finely modelled terracotta revetment tile that originates from the Song dynastic period of China (960–1279 AD), which displays an impressive natural scene. The central vignette features a monkey climbing among swirling vegetation, such as scrolling leaves, lotuses, and peonies. This scene is set within a florid frame, which was a common motif in Buddhist art that was derived from the Indian chaitya arch. The reverse remains rough and unworked, with some superficial cracks to the surface.
