Object Description

A finely modelled terracotta revetment tile that originates from the Song dynastic period of China (960–1279 AD), which displays an impressive natural scene. The central vignette features a monkey climbing among swirling vegetation, such as scrolling leaves, lotuses, and peonies. This scene is set within a florid frame, which was a common motif in Buddhist art that was derived from the Indian chaitya arch. The reverse remains rough and unworked, with some superficial cracks to the surface.

Acquired in the 1970s – 1990s within Hong Kong Collection. Then Ex West Country Collecton, UK.

Object Condition

Good condition, signs of wear consistent with age along with earthly encrustation across the surface. Crack to the top of the tile and minor chips along the edges.
