Christofle gilt metal and purple glass cherub-handled centrepiece bowl
French, 19th Century
Height 22cm, width 52cm, depth 25cm
This magnificent centrepiece is by Christofle (the gilt bronze stamped ‘Christofle’), one of the most celebrated goldsmiths and manufacturers of tableware in France since its foundation in 1830. The centrepiece is formed from a gilt bronze support and a purple (or ‘amethyst’) glass bowl. The gilt bronze, superbly cast and finished, is in an eclectic Neoclassical style, featuring cherubs and a host of naturalistic detailing—such as the branch-like legs. The glass bowl is beautifully faceted, the curves of its arched rim complementing the curvilinear gilt bronze throughout.
