Standing at 1.65 metres (65 inches) in height, these opulent vases are designed to make an impact. The vases are truly monumental works, decorated to the highest standard, and with their rich gold and deep blue coloring, exude a sense of luxury and grandeur.
Each vase is decorated in the Rococo style popularised by the craftsmen working at Sevres throughout the 18th Century, and features exceptional scrolling gilt decorations on a cobalt blue ground. There are painted scenes on the bodies of each vase, with the front side showing figures in an 18th Century interior, and the reverse showing landscape scenes of parks. Each interior scene is signed ‘M. Perret’.
Both of the vases have removable lids, which are surmounted by gilt bronze pinecone finials, and marked to the underside with the mark for the Sevres porcelain manufactory, the Chateau des Tuileries, and a blue underglaze inscription reading ‘Offert par le Duc de Richelieu / a la Princesse de Lamballe’, all in imitation of 18th Century pieces.
The vases are further enhanced with finely cast gilt bronze mounts, including twin caryatid-form handles to each side, and sit on square-form gilt bronze bases with floral garland detailing above.
