Object Literature

Robertson became one of the finest watercolourists of his era. Born in Liverpool, he studied art in London and went to live in Aix-en-Provence. While there he heard about the potential for artists working in the Near East and Arab world. He embarked on a tour of Algeria in 1862 and later visited Turkey, Jerusalem, Damascus, Egypt and Tangiers and painted many street and market scenes there. He married in Cheltenham in 1865 and the couple went on to have six children and later lived at Walton-on-the-Thames.

As well as painting eastern scenes, Charles Robertson painted many delightful locations in the south of England. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Suffolk Street Galleries and over one hundred works at the Old Water Colour Society. He was elected to full membership of the Royal Watercolour Society and became Vice President of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers. Examples of his work are held in private and public collections, including the British Museum.
