Object History

Note: This lithograph was not part of the “Ten Dancers” series but was made immediately afterwards. It has a jauntiness and energy which that series somehow does not possess. In that group the subject is generally at rest and relaxing. In this the dancer is about to spring into an energetic life of whirl and grace. It has a sense of humour, poise and affection for the subject
Provenance: The stock of Henri M Petiet, Paris. The dealers stamp H.M.P in an oval, verso. Petiet was one of the most famous art dealers of Paris in the post war era. He bought the stock of Vollard on that dealers untimely death and proceeded to become one of the leading print dealers in Paris. The fact that our piece emanates from this source gives authenticity and prominence to it.
