Object Description

A fine Regency domestic regulator longcase clock influenced by Egyptian design.

The highly-figured flame mahogany veneered case is typical of the Regency period, having an architectural pediment and ebonised accents of geometric Egyptian-inspired design.  The recessed trunk door is flanked by brass capitals over fluted pilasters.

The 12″ silvered well-engraved dial has Roman numerals and large subsidiary seconds and calendar dials with a strike/silent lever above the twelve. It is signed by the maker, Tight, Reading. The decorative original matching hands are particularly attractive.

The domestic regulator five pillar eight-day movement has a deadbeat escapement and Harrison maintaining power. It is regulated by a compensated gridiron pendulum with large brass bob and graduated rating nut. The movement is additionally supported by an arched iron strut to carry the extra weight of the very heavy gridiron pendulum.

Original brass cased weights.

George Tight was apprenticed to his father of the same name on 8th January 1798. He is listed as working at 100 Broad Street, Reading in the 1830 Pigots Directory of Berks, Bucks, Glos, Hants and Oxon (Berkshire section) trade directory in the Watch & Clock Makers section.

Object Condition

The movement is overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
