Object Literature

John Mogford was born in London in 1821 to the artist and picture dealer Henry Mogford (1787-1874). He was undoubtedly tutored and encouraged by his father and later attended the Government School of Design at Somerset House. He exhibited many works at the Royal Academy from 1846-188. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Dowdeswell Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and Society of British Artists.

Mogford travelled around Devon and Cornwall and became well known for his coastal scenes often featuring fishing boats and figures on a beach. He married the daughter of the artist Francis Danby and lived at Hampstead. He also taught art at Maddox Street Art School and one of his pupils was Emily Mary Osborn. Mogford died in 1885.

A number of his works are held by public art collections including Bradford Museum, Oldham Gallery, Royal Academy, Sunderland Museum, the Walker Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
