Object Description

Early 18th century George I period desk made of quarter cut burr walnut with feather banding around the drawers. Desks of this height are sometimes referred to as an estate desk as they were designed to be stood at, but it could equally have been designed for use as a sideboard in the dining room or as a dressing table. This is a very good example of this period of pre-mahogany cabinet making. The hand made construction is very fine, with oak lined drawers, proper dovetails, feather banding and a double moulded edge around the drawer surround rather than on the drawers themselves. There are seven drawers as well as a cupboard set in the central recess. The walnut has faded to a lovely golden colour and the piece has achieved a good deep patina.
