Object Description
Early 18th century George I giltwood pier mirror in the manner of James Moore (circa 1670-October 1726) and John Gumley (circa 1670–19 December 1728). A mirror similar in design and seize is currently on display at Beningbrough Hall, North Yorkshire.
The rectangular plate framed with a simple moulding and perfected by a broken scroll arched pediment centered by carved plume surmount, with Fine foliate carving on a pounced ground, with leaf and scroll carved corners, the apron decorated with a central flower head, acanthus and foliate. The frame retaining its original gilding with the two original brass candle holders.
James Moore flourished between 1708 and 1726 and was in partnership with John Gumley. Gumley and Moore succeeded Gerrit Jensen as royal cabinet-makers in 1715. Moore is best known for his rich gesso furniture, while Gumley specialized in looking glasses.
A rare find, acquired in Germany, on sale in its intouched condition.
