Object Description

This fine, masterfully executed micromosaic, dating from around 1810, is crafted from thousands of minute tesserae, and depicts a Classical temple ruin in a rolling landscape with buildings in the background. A mother and child are seated on the patch of grass in front of the ruin. The mosaic is of rectangular form, and is set within an ormolu frame which features an interior border of leaf motifs. It is a particularly notable, and rare, example of micromosaic work, given its large size and exceptional fineness of detailing. The mosaic and frame have the following dimensions:

Plaque- Height 26.5cm, width 32.5cm
Frame- Height 32.5cm, width 38cm, depth 3.5cm
