Object Description

Set of 9 early 19th century Regency mahogany antique dining chairs. This set of chairs can be thought of as a set of eight chairs with one extra or a set of nine. If ten chairs are required then a similar carver can be found or an identical one can be made in our own workshops at additional cost. Ask for a quote if required. This set of chairs have some very nice Regency specific features such as sabre legs which are reeded on the front and upper surfaces. The back rest has a panel of flame mahogany and gadrooning to the top edge. The back rail has the classic rope twist which alludes to the recent success of the British Navy at the battle of the Nile and the subsequent definitive defeat by the British Army of Napoleon at Waterloo. These chairs are made of good timber, they are precisely carved and it is easy to change the fabric on the drop in seats. The sabre legs are a nice feature which echo the Klismos chair and similar designs found in images found at the excavations of the time in Italy and Greece. English circa 1815 £8800 The single chairs 79cm / 31″ high 46cm / 18″ wide 51cm / 20″ deep 45cm / 17½” high The carver chair 79cm / 31″ high 51cm / 20″ wide 54cm / 21″ deep (seat height a bit high at present due to squab)
