Object Description

This elegant 19th century Laver Kirman has a creative overall pattern of large scale proportion in which each intricate palmette is cleverly repeated in a different shape and colour combination, framed by a wide ivory border. The remarkable quality of the wool explains the crispness and clarity of the drawing.  The natural dyed harmonious colours including red, sky-blue, various greens and ivory, have mellowed nicely with age.

A timeless beauty to complement a variety of settings.

Object History

The city of Kirman in north-east Persia has been the centre of fine rug weaving since the 17th century and enjoyed a renaissance in the 19th century when rug weaving became more widespread.

Kirman established itself once again during this era as a centre of high category weavings in the best Persian tradition. 19th century Kirman carpets, particularly those in the Laver group, are known for their technically superior weaves, delicate drawings and an incomparable range of  varied colours.

They are highly sought after and are often seen in grand historic houses in Europe and the UK.
