Object Description

This fine large and crested George II silver castor was made in London in 1736 by Peter Archambo a very good silversmith and measures over 7.5 inches tall by 3 inches at it’s widest and is 2 9/16 inches across the base. It has a crest to the front of an armoured arm holding a dagger with a mottoed garter around it which reads IN HONESTUM ILLICITUM, a smaller identical castor weighing 8.6 ounces was sold as lot 276 in Bonhams in 2004 sold for £1351.00. The pull off top is beautifully pierced and has a baluster finial that is marked with the makers mark and lion passant, it is fully and clearly hallmarked under the base and is in excellent condition weighing 12.20 ounces or 380 grams.
