Object Description

This antique enamelled brooch by Krementz depicts two mirroring Delphinium flowers. Delphinium, Larkspur, symbolizes frivolity in the language of flowers. The highly decorative structural Delphiniums got their name from ancient Greeks because of the shape of their developing buds, which are reminiscent of dolphins. The last photo shows the real flower with the upper petals extended behind the flower into nectaries that fit side by side inside the characteristic spur of the uppermost sepal.
At the end of the 19th century, Newark, New Jersey, was considered to be the USA capital of jewellery. Here, cousins George and Thomas Krementz, started Krementz & Co, one of the biggest companies selling gold and gold overlay jewellery. Both naturalistic and art nouveau designs were trendy at the time. The enamel is original, translucent fondant enamel in green and pink. The pearls are baroque natural freshwater Mississippi pearls, without cracks. The total weight of the brooch is 4 grams.
