A cast iron Pen Rest, made to flat pack for travel or storage.
The Pen Rest is made in three pieces: 2 sides and a horizontal section which unites them. This middle section has a pair of lugs to each end which sit within a pair of corresponding semi-circular holders to each side section. The side sections each have a sprung steel bar that allow them to fold either parallel to the middle section or to fix at a right angle to it for use. The middle section also has a stop cast to each side to prevent the sides folding too far.
The Rest is cast with an Art Nouveau floral design and the registration number 480712 to the underside of the middle section. This dates the design to 1906. A few different versions of this Pen Rest were made, all working to the same principal. The registration numbers we have seen range from 1900 to 1906.
It will hold 6 pens, pencils or paint brushes and would be a practical addition to a desk. Dated 1906.
