Description
An antique French gold lion head bangle c.1890s, designed as a solid bangle in 18ct yellow gold with rounded profile and small opening, each end terminated by a finely modelled lion head with open roaring mouth, sharp teeth, hooded eyes and thick fur, the head and neck with a matte, finely hammered textured appearance, linked to the bangle by a wrap of gold rope twist. The lion is known as the king of beasts and was held to symbolise strength, courage, majesty and justice amongst other positive attributes. The bangle is a generous size and easy to slip on and off, it works well worn alone or with other bangles/ bracelets. It has a lovely patina commensurate with age and the fine texture of the heads contrasts with the more polished finish of the body of the bangle. A lovely wearable piece of antique jewellery.
