Object Description
A charming antique French gold cat brooch c.1902, the three-dimensional brooch realistically modelled as the head of a cat with long fur in 18ct yellow gold, the cat facing forward with ears pricked, its mouth open to reveal sharp teeth and the eyes set with little emerald cabochons, to a single pin brooch fitting, the reverse engraved in italic script with ‘E de C 3 Août 1902’. The fur has been beautifully rendered and looks thick and dense, the cat almost appears to have a ruff of it around its neck. The brooch has a lovely weight to it and whilst we don’t know who E or C were, it would seem safe to say they were cat lovers. This little feline is now looking for his next home and a new lapel to sit on.
