This spectacular Empire style suite of seating furniture — comprising an upholstered pair of armchairs and a canapé (sofa) — was crafted in the late 19th Century in France.
The pair of armchairs are set on four straight mahogany legs, the front two of which are set on gilt bronze paw feet. These legs are mounted with gilt bronze palmettes and rosettes, whilst a laurel leaf motif runs along their aprons. Gilt bronze sphinxes serve as arm rests, supporting the padded arms on their outstretched wings. These arms, along with the seats and backs, have been upholstered in a black fabric which is decorated with gold stripes, complementing the colour of the gilt bronze mounts. The chairs lean back slightly, and their tops are scrolled and ornamented with more leafy and floral forms, with a laurel leaf feature on the top rail mirroring that on the apron.
The two-seater sofa is of a matching design, incorporating sphinx armrests and black and gold striped upholstery.
With their formal references to Ancient Egypt and Imperial Rome, typical of the Empire style, these chairs will add beauty and grandeur to an interior.
