Object Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique French silver wine/champagne cooler; an addition to our presentation silverware collection.

This exceptional antique French silver wine cooler has a cylindrical rounded form.

The surface of this antique wine cooler is embellished with the contemporary engraved monogram initials ‘NAW’.

The upper portion of the body is encircled with a cast and applied band of intertwining ribbon and laurel branch decoration, flanked with a plain moulded border, in addition to an applied tiered leaf festoon decorated border to the rim.

The antique wine cooler is fitted with two cast and applied handles, each fashioned in the form of lion’s masks grasping a leaf decorated drop-ring handle.

This antique silver wine cooler is encircled with a further cast and applied leaf festoon decorated border, identical to that of the upper rim.

The hallmarks struck to the surface of the cooler include:

Maker’s mark: E.F. un mouton / a sheep (Edouard Fournemet)

Silver quality/purity mark: Minerva mark, 1 (.950, 950/1000)

Object Condition

This antique silver wine cooler is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

There are some minor surface blemishes to the surface and interior of the wine cooler, in keeping with age.

The cast and applied decoration is very sharp.

The French hallmarks struck to the surface of the vessel are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of continental silverware.
