Object Description

A good antique sterling silver lidded tankard with domed lid. Lovely plain design with simple straight sides, the body with a concentric reed ring to the base of the handle. The hand engraved armorial has a crest and motto “Stabilis in Fide”. Owners initials to the top of the handle. Contains 1070 ml. Weight 864 grams, 27.7 troy ounces. Height 18.2 cm. Spread 18 cm. Diameter 10.5 cm (top). London 1738. Maker Richard Gosling.

Richard Gosling, apprenticed to Matthew Cuthbert 1712, free 1719. 1st mark as smallworker 1733, 2nd mark as largeworker 1739, 3rd mark 1748.

Object Condition

A good quality tankard in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Stamped with a fully matching and clear set of English silver marks to the body and lid, handle with maker’s mark. The engravings are crisp. Some slight discoloration to the body.
